Alpacas- gentle, hugging fiber producers
We have entered the world of alpacas. Due to the economy
they are so much more affordable then I imagined they ever would be, but you have to look around. I am finding
alpaca folks to be very kind and gentle people, like the animals they care for.
I am getting them primarily to have personal, daily contact
with camelids for my herb work, and my husband has always been enchanted by their cute faces, fluffy appearance, and their
soft large eyes. Because they are a production animal, we do plan to breed them as well as harvest
their fiber and have it spun by an Oregon mill and then have our alternative raised yarn for sale. We
have both breeds, Huacayas and Suris. Like
goats or horses, they should have a same species companion. One nice trait is that they don't challenge
fencing, unlike the goats and horses! But of course you must fence properly to protect them from dogs, coyotes,
etc. and to protect the crias from sticking their necks through and getting stuck or hurt. They can pack, but
not as much weight as a llama. Their fiber is at least as soft as cashmere, is extremely light weight, very cozy/warm,
and strong. I own my first pair of alpaca fiber socks and wish I'd known about these decades ago!
We are offering breeding services to both Suris and Huacayas at low introductory standards with an additional
price break on several breedings... See them at athe above link...
